Velcro for the win!

Writer's picture: Mary HillMary Hill

I am always finding a new way to get my students involved with building words. I’ve used tiles, building blocks and stack-able cubes, magnets, paper, foamy...etc. I feel like I have tried it all. Then I was just searching in my craft box and came across Velcro.

VELCRO. Just like magnets it sticks. This means letters won't get lost or mixed up. Students can put the letters back in their place. I love to stay neat and organize. These are also life skills for our students. In addition, I can make as many letters of each as I need. That is why there are a few of each letter! You could also make capitals.

What I also did was hot glue this to the back of a whiteboard. It is not scratchy. The board also balances it's self out because I put the blank line to create the words at the bottom. So now this white board functions in two ways. Less things needed in the classroom and more learning can take place!

So go on over to your local fabric store or online and buy yourself some Velcro. I used about a yard of Velcro. It might be pricier than foamy or paper but it lasts! Start by making a set for a small group. Five or six boards and then you can build up to a class set!
