ABC lines aren't so ordinary

We buy our cute little ABC lines for our classroom. They go above our white boards or smart boards as we set up our classrooms for our class to walk in and see a beautifully set up room with all the bells and whistles. We have taken pictures and posted them and we are ready!

I will preach more about decorations and classroom decor as it turns into wall paper or paint later, but for today, let's stay focused... focused on the ABC line.
ABC line. A,B,C,D and so on. They come in all fun shapes, colors, sizes, fonts, upper case, lower case, with pictures or words, and even in different languages to match the language's alphabet. Have you ever thought of the power behind this little decoration? The more we engage our students the more active and the more they are learning.
A great beginning of the year activity is creating things for the classroom. Students like to see their work. So take this opportunity for them to build the ABC line. This idea can be used in many ways. Let the students pick a word for each letter. They will love to draw a picture for each letter. Allow them to write the word (you might need to help them) and add a picture to match. Post the ABC chart. Make a new one later on in the year when the students have new vocabulary or new picture words. Use it as a word wall, a picture wall, a high frequency word wall, exemplar words (another post too), any way you want!
Take your pre-made ABC line down and put up one your students make. Watch their connections, watch them use it, watch how it becomes a living learning opportunity for your whole class.
Need differentiation? 26 letters one per student, the ones who finish early get another one... print small ones and have students create their own. Double up if some students need assistance! Allow students to use technology for research and to explore! Can they teach each other their words they created?
